One Dead After Vehicle Gets Entangled in Power Lines From Storm
Henderson, Ky 6/2/22- Just after 10PM Wednesday night Henderson County and the surrounding areas were hit by severe thunderstorms with winds packing a punch. Many trees and power lines were taken down along with heavy rainfall and flash flooding in several areas.
Around 11:30PM, Zion Fire Department responded to the 8200 block of Zion Larue Road to assist the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office with a tree down across the roadway. While enroute to the scene, a Zion firetruck came upon downed power lines in the roadway on one end of Zion Larue Road and another firetruck met up with the deputy to cut up the tree on the other end of Zion Larue Road. Once the tree was removed, responders moved further down the roadway to block traffic to the power lines from both ends, to wait for the arrival of the power company.
Just after 1AM Thursday morning, a vehicle driven by an Aureah Grimes, 23 of Henderson, was traveling east on Zion Larue Road carrying three passengers, Brice Easley, 23 of Henderson, KY, Jayla Barre, 22 of Bowling Green, and Alysiana Langley, 18 of Henderson when the vehicle reportedly drove passed the firetrucks, then struck a utility pole which was leaning over from the storm.
Deputies say Langley got out of the vehicle as Grimes tried to back the vehicle up and drove over live power lines. Barre and Easley both remained in the vehicle. Barre received burn injuries and was transported to Deaconess Midtown while Easley received an electric shock but no injury.
Grimes was pronounced dead at the scene by the Henderson County Coroner’s Office.
Officials say the car caught fire once it received the electric shock from the power lines and became fully engulfed before firefighters could get close enough to extinguish the flames.
Zion Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Henderson Emergency Management Agency, Deaconess Henderson EMS, Kenergy, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Henderson County Coroners Office, Henderson 911 Dispatch Center, and the Henderson City/ County Rescue Squad.
