Dryer The Cause For Fire at the Detention Center

Henderson, KY 12/11/21- Just before 10PM Wednesday night firefighters with the Henderson Fire Department were dispatched to the report of what appeared to be a HVAC unit on top of the Henderson County Detention Center on fire. The initial caller reported flames visible from EMS station across the street on Borax Drive.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found flames coming from the roof. Once firefighters knocked down the fire on the roof they reported heavy fire still coming from inside the building.

According to Jailer Amy Brady, an inmate trustee working in the laundry room had already alerted jail staff of the fire and jail staff responded locating one of the dryers on fire. She says jail staff utilized fire extinguishers on the fire but the fire quickly spread up the dryer vent and to the roof. The Henderson Fire Department arrived on scene and the fire was reported to be controlled shortly thereafter.

Jailer Brady says inmates housed in the affected wing were relocated to a safe location in a different area of the facility, a headcount was conducted for the entire facility, and all inmates were accounted for.

“The facility was quickly ventilated to remove smoke as well as the fire department conducted air quality checks throughout the process. After extensive air quality checks, no hazardous levels were detected and the housing areas were cleared to be re-populated.”
