City of Henderson: Boat Docks Coming Out Thursday | Labor Day Schedules

HENDERSON, KY 9/1/21– The City of Henderson has several upcoming changes happening all around town. First, trash collection in the City of Henderson and services at the landfill/transfer station will be operating on a different schedule the week of Labor Day, Sept. 6th. Monday, Sept. 6th is a holiday for City of Henderson employees and there will be no trash collection that day.

Here’s the schedule for the week:

  • Monday, Sept. 6: Holiday. No collection.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 7: Regular Monday routes and that portion of the Tuesday routes that lies north of 12th Street (including Harding Trailer Park) will be collected.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 8: The remainder of the Tuesday routes and Wednesday routes will be collected.
  • Thursday, Sept. 9: Normal collection.
  • Friday, Sept. 10: Normal collection.

Residential trash collection begins at 5 a.m. The landfill also will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6th and will reopen for normal operations at 7AM on Tuesday, Sept. 7th. Labor Day Week is recycling week in Henderson and recycling routes will be picked up one day later than usual.

Secondly, the City of Henderson’s Parks & Recreation Department has set some dates for the closing of water features. The Riverfront Water Feature will close after Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 6th) in order for some long-awaited repairs on piping can begin and get it back in shape for next season.

The Parks Department will monitor the demand at the East End Park Sprayground over the next two weeks before determining when to close it for the season. Water features are expected to reopen in May 2022 just in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

The fountain in Central Park is also undergoing some repairs at the Alabama foundry where it was fabricated and will be reinstalled as soon as repairs are complete.

For more information, contact the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department at 270-831-1274.

Lastly, the City of Henderson Public Works crews will remove the boat docks at the riverfront on Thursday because of the rising Ohio River. Heavy rainfall upstream over the past days in the wake of the Hurricane Ida system is pushing up the river level. The docks will not be available for the Labor Day holiday weekend.

“Typically, the boat ramps need to come out when the river gets to 22 feet to prevent them from breaking away from their moorings,” said Public Works Director Brian Williams “crews will reinstall the boat docks at the Second Street boat ramp and the Hayes Park boat ramp as soon as it is possible, but the river elevation forecast is uncertain and subject to change at this time. Please use care when using any of the city’s boat ramps.”
