HENDERSON, Ky 6/7/21– GOOD NEWS for the swimming season at Atkinson Pool!

An adequate pool of lifeguard candidates and support staff has been created and the hiring/training process has started to get the pool open for standard hours before the end of June. A two-week lifeguard certification course starts today, June 7.

The Parks Department had planned to open Atkinson Pool on Memorial Day weekend, but it was not possible because of a lack of lifeguard applicants required to operate the pool safely.

A couple of things happened to increase the number of applicants: The Board of Commissioners lowered the eligibility age for lifeguards to 15 and also increased the starting pay rate to be more competitive.

Once open, pool hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Parks Director Trace Stevens said pool facility rentals also should be available starting in July.

Meanwhile, the City has opened the Riverfront Water Feature and the Splash Pad at East End Park.
